I put a spell on you
It’s official: I’m in love. Finally!!! After 23 years of pining and yearning for that adrenalin rush that you get when you’re abso-fucking-lutely in love to dash into my life and save me from my drudgery, I was almost ready to give up when it happened tonight.
It started the moment the lights warmed the stage.
The dance gods from Complexions Contemporary Ballet, outfitted in sexy deep red, made time stood still with their raw energy and evident technical prowess which they rightly took full advantage of. The beauty of their performances – it was a full-on two-hour show with two intermissions, which sounds like a lot, until you see how much happened in just the first half hour – lies in the choreography, which was evocative and aptly put to the awesome Jim Hendrix rendition of the U.S. anthem Star Spangled Banner.
There are several moments in life when your breath is simply taken away. This was exactly what my dream company would look like, only this is real and in the flesh. The pairing of the couples was astute and spot-on in most instances, which tells a lot about the choreographer’s finely-tuned visualization and intuition. A lot of what transpires during the performance can hardly been done justice with the ordinary tributes of “amazing”, “spectacular”, “moving”, “inspiring”, “fascinating”. In a word, they’re just abso-fucking-lutely amazing.
If you ever need a reason to attend a dance performance even once in your life, at least go to one of this company’s before you die. And I am dead serious. This is one company which truly embraces and knows its dancers well, so well that their strengths became rapidly obvious in just a few moments. Their individual styles are diverse to the point of starkness. Some stood out with their precise sharpness in execution and interpretation of the dance, while others remain content to just enjoy the movements and indulge in their faculties.
There are always shortcomings in every company and in this case, Complexions manage to turn them into showcases of their hard work. Some are really great actors; they can make you laugh, sympathize or leap with joy with them. Others are better at conveying through their bodies, saying it best with their fluid and supple limbs without missing a beat. Nina Simone nailed what I was feeling when I finally haul my ass out of my seat long after the final applause when she sang “I put a spell on you”. I miss them already…
